Adhesions are scar tissue that form between organs inside the abdomen. The two common reasons for this formation are intra-abdominal surgery and infection. Some other reasons can be trauma and radiation. Women with endometriosis have extensive adhesions and this is the reason for their pain and infertility. Abdominal adhesions can involve some of these organs within the abdomen like uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder, appendix, ureters, liver, kidneys, and spleen. The involvent of tubes and ovaries can lead to infertility as the adhesions compromises the ovum pickup or can cause tubal dysfunction (torsion or block). The incidence of post operative adhesions are maximum after an open surgery and minimal after minimally invasive surgery like laparoscopic or robotic surgery.
These adhesions can cause certain problems
- Organ dysfunction like bowel obstruction
Adhesiolysis is the sugery that is performed to remove or divide adhesions. This helps in restoring the normal anatomy and organ function. Also helps to reducing pain and improving fertility. Laparoscopic adhesiolysis is the recommended method to treat intrabdominal adhesions. This can prevent development of further adheisons, hence open surgery should not be done to treat adhesions. Laparoscopic surgery has less postoperative pain and quick recovery time with shorter hospital stay.
Was invited to operate at Raipur Medical College at the FOGSI North Zone Yuva Congress. Dr Rooma Sinha demonstrated urogynecological surgeries for the delegates and later also gave lecture on setting standards for caesarean Section.
